AIEO vs SEO: what actually changes for your business

· · 6 min read

If you’ve started reading about “AIEO”, “GEO” or “AEO”, you’d be forgiven for thinking there’s a whole new discipline you suddenly have to buy. There’s a lot of noise about it — and a lot of agencies newly slapping an “AI” sticker on plain old SEO. So here’s the honest version: what actually changes when the goal is being recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews — and, just as importantly, what doesn’t.

First, the acronyms all mean roughly the same thing

AIEO (AI Engine Optimisation), GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) are different names for one idea: getting your business found, trusted and cited inside AI answer engines, rather than just ranking in the old list of blue links. Don’t get hung up on which acronym wins — the work behind them is the same. (We covered how AI actually decides which businesses to recommend separately if you want the mechanics.)

What genuinely changes

1. The goal shifts from “rank” to “get named.” In classic SEO you want position one on a results page. With AI answers there’s often no list to climb — the AI just names two or three businesses in a sentence. You’re either in that sentence or you’re invisible. Ranking number one the old way doesn’t guarantee you’re the one it mentions.

2. Clarity and structure matter more. An AI has to extract a recommendation from your content. Vague, clever, meandering copy that a human might forgive gives a machine nothing to lift. Pages that plainly state what you do, where, for whom — and answer real questions directly — are far easier to quote. The reward for being clear, and the penalty for being ambiguous, both go up.

3. Your off-site picture matters more. An AI assembles who you are from across the whole web — reviews, directories, mentions, your socials — not just your homepage. So consistency of your business facts everywhere, and being mentioned by other credible sites, carry more weight than ever.

4. Measurement is different. You can’t yet open a dashboard and see “ChatGPT ranking #3.” You measure it by monitoring what the AI engines actually say about you and your competitors over time, and by watching for the enquiries that arrive without an obvious source.

What doesn’t change (the part nobody selling “AIEO packages” tells you)

Here’s the honest bit: most of the work is the same work. A fast, clean, well-structured website. Content that answers what buyers actually ask. Genuine reviews. Consistent business details. Being mentioned by others. Technical SEO and schema. Every one of those is a traditional SEO fundamental — and every one of them also makes you more likely to be cited by an AI.

That’s why you should be sceptical of anyone selling “AIEO” as a separate, expensive, mysterious product. There’s no button that adds you to ChatGPT. A business that’s genuinely well-presented online tends to show up in AI answers and rank in Google. The fundamentals didn’t get replaced — they got more important, and ambiguity got more expensive.

So what should you actually do?

  • Say what you do, plainly. Every key page should state the service, the location and who it’s for, in language a machine can’t misread.
  • Answer real questions. Turn the questions your customers actually ask into clear, directly-answered content — which is also just good marketing.
  • Get your facts consistent everywhere — name, location, services — across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and socials.
  • Earn genuine reviews and mentions. They’re credibility signals both search engines and AIs lean on.
  • Fix the technical basics — speed, structure, schema — so machines can read and trust you.

Do those well and you’re doing “AIEO” — you just don’t need to call it that, or pay a premium for the acronym.

We do this for our own business, so we’ll be candid: a real share of our own enquiries now come from people who found us because an AI recommended us. If you want an honest read on whether your business shows up in AI answers today — and what would move the needle — that’s what our AI Search Optimisation (AIEO) work is for.
