Why you rank #1 in one suburb and vanish two suburbs over

· · 5 min read

Here’s a scenario we hear constantly from Adelaide business owners: “I’m number one on Google Maps when I search from the shop. But my mate in a suburb ten minutes away says I don’t come up at all. What’s going on — is my SEO broken?”

It’s not broken. You’re seeing the single most misunderstood thing about local search: the map results change depending on where the person searching is standing. Once you understand that, a lot of confusing rankings suddenly make sense.

The map pack is personalised by location

When someone searches “physio near me” or “electrician Prospect”, Google’s local map results (the “map pack”) weigh a few big factors — and one of the heaviest is proximity: how close your business is to the person doing the searching. That’s why you dominate near your own address and fade the further out someone goes.

It means there is no single “rank” for a local business. You have a different ranking from every location someone might search. Checking your own position while standing in your shop tells you almost nothing about what a customer across town sees. That’s why the “I’m number one!” and “you don’t show up!” arguments are both true at the same time.

Why proximity is weighted so heavily

From Google’s point of view it makes sense: someone searching “coffee near me” wants coffee they can walk to, not the best-reviewed café 30km away. For genuinely local, come-to-us businesses, that logic is reasonable. The catch is that it frustrates businesses that serve a wider area but only have one physical address — because Google keeps anchoring them to that one point on the map.

What you can actually influence (and what you can’t)

Let’s be honest about the limits first: you can’t fake proximity. You can’t make Google think your one shopfront is in five suburbs at once, and anyone promising to is selling you something that risks your listing. What you can do is strengthen every other signal so you rank as far out as your relevance and reputation can carry you:

  • Get your Google Business Profile genuinely strong. Complete, accurate, correct primary category, real photos, current information. This is the single biggest lever most businesses leave half-pulled.
  • Earn reviews consistently. Volume and recency of reviews are a real relevance and prominence signal — and they help you rank further from your pin than a thin profile ever will.
  • Build real relevance for what you do. Your website and profile need to make it unmistakable what services you offer and where. The clearer and more genuinely authoritative you are on your services, the wider your reach.
  • If you truly serve multiple areas, structure for it properly. There’s a right way and a wrong way to build pages for multiple suburbs — done badly, your own pages end up competing with each other. That’s a whole topic on its own, and worth getting right rather than churning out thin suburb pages.

The honest takeaway

If you’re a single-location business, expect to be strongest near your location and to fade with distance — that’s normal and it’s not a failure. The goal isn’t to “rank everywhere” (you can’t), it’s to rank as far out as your relevance, reviews and profile strength can reasonably take you, and to make sure nothing on your side is holding that back.

If you’re genuinely serving a wide area and the map is boxing you into one suburb, that’s worth a proper look — sometimes it’s a Business Profile that’s underbuilt, sometimes it’s a website structure problem. We’re happy to tell you which, honestly, before you spend anything. It’s the same real-world, no-nonsense approach we took in our half-a-cow local SEO story.
