How Buyers Who've Never Heard of You Find You: Rank for the Question, Not the Product
If someone already knows your business, they’ll find you — they’ll search your name and land on your site. That traffic is nice, but it isn’t growth. Real growth is being found by the people who have never heard of you, at the moment they’re weighing up a purchase but don’t yet know who to buy from.
The problem is that most businesses only publish pages that assume you already know what you want — product and service pages. Those pages are essential, but they’re the last step of a buyer’s journey, not the first. And the first step is almost always a question.
A page that teaches, ranking ahead of pages that sell
Take Inna Protein, a plant-protein brand. They have the product pages you’d expect. But some of their strongest discovery pages don’t sell anything — they explain an ingredient.
Inna’s protein is made from faba beans, which most people have never heard of. So they published genuinely useful content about it: a page explaining faba beans, and an article walking through what faba bean protein actually is. Those pages rank around position 2 to 8 in Google for searches like “is faba bean protein powder good for you” and “faba bean protein powder” — questions asked by people researching the ingredient, the overwhelming majority of whom have never heard of Inna.
That’s the whole point. Those searchers arrive with a question, get a clear answer, and in the process discover a brand built entirely around that ingredient. The educational page did the introduction that no product page ever could.
Why the question beats the product
Every buyer moves through a journey. Long before someone searches “buy [your brand]”, they search things like:
- “is [ingredient / material / method] any good?”
- “[option A] vs [option B]”
- “how do I fix / choose / stop [problem]?”
- “what should I look for in [product]?”
If you own the answers to those questions, three things happen:
You meet buyers before your competitors do. The business that answers the early question is the one that frames the whole decision — and is remembered when it’s time to buy.
There’s far less competition. Everyone fights over the money terms (“buy protein powder”). Almost nobody puts real effort into the genuine question content — so it’s often wide open.
It lifts everything else. Answering the questions around your product builds topical authority, which helps your actual product and service pages rank too. And AI answer tools — ChatGPT, Gemini, Google’s AI overviews — quote clear, useful answers, so question content is exactly what gets you cited by AI search.
How to find your questions
You already know them — you answer them every day. The trick is writing them down and publishing the answers:
- List what people ask before they buy. The ingredient, the material, the “is this safe / worth it / right for me” questions. Your inbox and your sales calls are full of them.
- Answer each one properly, on its own page. Not a thin paragraph — the genuinely useful, honest answer, the one you’d give a good customer.
- Lead with the answer. State it plainly near the top so a human (and an AI tool) gets the value immediately.
- Link it to the product or service it relates to, so the reader has an obvious next step once you’ve earned their trust.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Most businesses publish only pages that sell and none that teach. So they’re invisible until the exact moment someone already knows what they want — and they miss every buyer still working it out.
If your product solves a problem, involves an ingredient or material people don’t fully understand, or gets compared against alternatives, there’s a whole layer of search demand sitting above your product pages, waiting for someone to answer it. Owning those answers is some of the highest-leverage SEO work a growing business can do.
